Welcome to the Airways Biology Initiative at the University of Pennsylvania.

The ABI is an interdisciplinary program which combines expertise in cellular, molecular, genetic and clinical science. We are devoted to understanding the pathogenesis of airway diseases that include asthma, COPD (chronic bronchitis and emphysema), bronchiectasis, LAM and cystic fibrosis, and to seeking their cures. The ABI is an integral part of the Department of Medicine and occupies 6,000 square foot of bench laboratory space. We have a dedicated clinical research facility including an outpatient research bronchoscopy suite and a full pulmonary function laboratory committed to respiratory research. Our staff is comprised of 30 full-time faculty as well as faculty members from the Wistar Institute, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), the School of Nursing and Dental Medicine. We also have postdoctoral fellows and students who have primary appointments in the School of Medicine. The Departments of Medicine, Pharmacology, Surgery, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Cell Biology and Radiology are all represented. The ABI is primarily supported by federal and industry sources. We provide regular visiting professorships and seminar series and we support the career development of junior faculty.
