Preparation Prior to Class

For those enrolling in either the ACLS New Provider (1 or 1 ½ Day) or Recertification Course (4-Hour or 8-Hour),  we recommend you:

  • Obtain and review the current AHA ACLS Provider Manual prior to attending the course.
  • The AHA student website www.heart.org/eccstudent (password: compression) contains a pre-course self-assessment and additional review materials.  We recommend you take this test to identify areas where you need to improve your knowledge.
  • Be prepared to demonstrate 1 & 2 rescuer CPR/AED skills. Review and understand all BLS 2010 guidelines related to the adult patient.  For those who require BLS certification, this is offered separately.
  • Be familiar with the ACLS algorithms (see flowcharts in your manual), as you will use these in your clinical scenarios.
  • Please bring your current ACLS card (needed only for ACLS Recertification), and UPHS employee ID to class for admission.
  • ACLS Provider Manual and CD may be purchased from the following vendors or from the Simulation Center ($33).

  • Complete the HeartCode ACLS on-line course prior to this class. This is a 2 to 8 hour version of the ACLS course (depending on your proficiency); it is not the same pre-course self-assessment found on the AHA student website.
  • You have 32 hours from the time you begin the course to complete it and the skills competency segment must be taken within 30 days of the completion of that.
  • Please bring your HeartCode ACLS Certificate of Completion (not the CME certificate), and UPHS employee ID to class for admission.
  • HeartCode ACLS ($120) is required for the Skills Check. An access code for HeartCode ACLS may also be purchased at the Simulation Center or www.onlineaha.org.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing. You will be practicing skills that may require you to work on yours hands and knees.
