Cancer Prevention
Introduction
Led by Caryn Lerman, Ph.D., the Institute's cancer prevention research program applies molecular genetics advances to the development of new cancer prevention and control strategies.

One area of research integrates patient decision-making with breast and colon cancer genetic testing for high-risk families. Lerman's team has recently found that the demand for genetic testing is significantly lower than anticipated, patients generally cope well with genetic test results, and significant adverse effects are rare. The group has also found that carriers of the breast and colon genes are not performing monitoring and prevention strategies at the recommended level.
