Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers are one of the most common types of cancer and carry a poor prognosis in advanced stages. Under the direction of Anil Rustgi, M.D., the GI cancer research team strives to understand the mechanisms that drive the development of these cancers. The team's work is directed towards developing new chemoprevention strategies, better detection and diagnostic methods, and improved treatments.

The researchers have recently identified a region on chromosome 22q that is frequently lost in colon cancer progression and also in breast and ovarian cancers. They have also explained how genes are regulated in pancreatic ductal cells and created a novel model of pancreatic cancer that will be useful for diagnosis and therapy. They are currently characterizing models of esophageal cancer, the fastest growing type of cancer, that could lead to innovative chemoprevention and treatment approaches.

Background
Dr. Rustgi received his training at Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard Medical School where he rose to Associate Professor of Medicine. He was recruited to the University of Pennsylvania in 1998 in his current position. His particular expertise is in the molecular genetics of GI cancers, especially those originating from the aero-upper digestive tract. In addition, he provides leadership in GI oncology programs devoted to chemoprevention, high-risk families and molecular diagnostics.
