Overview
During mammalian organogenesis, the processes of cell division, differentiation, and morphogenesis are painstakingly orchestrated to generate complex functioning three-dimensional structures. Many of the molecular mechanisms used during organ formation are also important during carcinogenesis and tissue regeneration. Our laboratory seeks to understand these overlapping programs and to exploit them to generate novel therapies in oncology and regenerative medicine. We focus on stem cells and progenitor cells in the vertebrate pancreas and liver, tissues with great clinical importance and a rich history in developmental biology.

Background
After graduating with an S.B. in Life Science from MIT in 1988, Dr. Stanger received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard Medical School in 1997. His Ph.D. work in Genetics, under the guidance of Dr. Philip Leder, examined the molecular mechanisms of apoptosis. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of California - San Francisco in 1999 and a clinical fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University in 2003. Dr. Stanger's postdoctoral research at Harvard was in the laboratory of Dr. Douglas Melton, where he studied the molecular mechanisms of pancreas development. He served as Instructor until coming to Penn in 2006, where he is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Gastroenterology Division and Assistant Investigator in the Leonard and Madlyn Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute.
