Xiaolu Yang, Ph.D., studies the genes that regulate apoptosis and investigates their application in treating cancer. All cells in the human body can initiate their own death through a process called apoptosis. Cells activate apoptosis when they become damaged or when they do not get enough nutrients. This form of regulated cell death prevents the body from accumulating excess or unwanted cells. For cancer cells to accumulate, they must lose their ability to undergo apoptosis.
Background
Xiaolu Yang received his BS in Physical Chemistry from Tsinghua University, China . He obtained his PhD in Genetics and Development from Columbia University in the laboratory of Dr. Marian Carlson. From 1994 to 1998, he did his postdoctoral research at MIT with Dr. David Baltimore. Xiaolu Yang joined the Penn faculty in 1998 and Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute in 2002. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Cancer Biology with tenure in 2005. Xiaolu Yang is a Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Scholar. |
