Research and/or Clinical Interests:
The impact of features of health care organizations on patient and provider outcomes, with a particular focus on the roles of nurses.

Summary:
Dr. Aiken has been a major contributor to health workforce and outcomes research for the past two decades. Her research related to HIV/AIDS has included a NIH-funded study of AIDS prevention policies in Chile and a national evaluation of the outcomes of dedicated AIDS units in U.S. hospitals. She is currently co-investigator on a randomized clinical trial to study adherence to HIV treatment regimens among the seriously mentally ill. She directs the International Hospital Outcomes Study accounting for variation in hospital outcomes in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and New Zealand. Dr. Aiken's research focuses on the substantive and methodological advances in health outcomes research across a variety of areas including health care systems, hospital quality of care, AIDS care and prevention, innovative models of primary care, and mental health services. She is Director of Penn's Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research, a research and training enterprise focusing on the outcomes of health care and health workforce policy. Dr. Aiken is also the Director of a new nursing quality initiative in Russia and Armenia sponsored by the American International Health Alliance in conjunction with Credentialing International of the American Nurses Credentialing Center, where the initiative is to assess the applicability of magnet hospital standards under developing-world conditions.
