Keywords: Depression, Medical Illnesses --concentration on HIV disease

Research and/or Clinical interests:
Determine if antidepressants, conventional and novel, can benefit HIV infected individuals and extend their survival rate

Summary:
Dr. Evans' research examines how stress and depression may affect key parameters of cellular immunity in normal subjects, psychiatric patients and patients with HIV infection.  Stress and depressive symptoms, especially when they occur jointly, are associated with decreased cellular immunity.  In immunocompromised individuals, such as patients with HIV infection or cancer, stress and depressive symptoms may have clinical implications for the course of the disease.  Underlying mechanisms with a specific focus on innate immunity are being studied as well as neuroendocrine and neuropeptide mechanisms.
