Keywords: quality of life; health status assessment; HIV risk behavior; sexual abuse (males)

Research and/or Clinical Interests:
Dr. Holmes has two primary research interests: he studies HIV/AIDS-specific health status using the HIV/AIDS-Targeted Quality of Life Instrument (HAT-QoL) that he developed; and he studies, in men, the mediating and moderating variables linking childhood sexual abuse to adult HIV risk behavior.

Summary:
Dr. Holmes is a boarded general internist with clinical and research interests focused on HIV/AIDS. He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and is a well-published epidemiologist and health services researcher. His Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08) from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease completed groundbreaking work in the area of HIV/AIDS-specific health status assessment, evaluating the HIV/AIDS-Targeted Quality of Life Instrument (HAT-QoL) that he developed. HAT-QoL is an assessment tool that measures nine dimensions of quality of life: overall function (including physical, role and social function); sexual function; health worries; medication worries; disclosure worries; financial worries; HIV mastery; life satisfaction; and provider trust. Dr. Holmes' current NIH-funded work is focused on study, in men, of the mediating and moderating variables linking childhood sexual abuse (CSA) to adult HIV risk behavior. His particular focus is on the interactions between CSA and psychiatric illness in explaining variation in risk behavior, and the potentially explanatory value of altered central nervous system development in those with CSA histories and chronic posttraumatic stress disorder. His other funded research has studied the changes in seropositive individual's illness modeling since the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapies (HAART), as well as distress related to HAART-related bodily changes due to fat redistribution syndromes.
