Assessment of growth and immunological status in children infected with HIV
Summary:
HIV-infected children grow poorly, but the cause is unclear. Poor growth may stem from poor nutrition, endocrinopathies, carbohydrate malabsorption, or social issues. Several studies have shown that short stature, but not low weight-for-height, characterizes the growth problems of symptomatic HIV-infected children. This is in contrast to failure to thrive which has a social or nutritional etiology, which is typically marked by a decrease in weight for age prior to a decline in height for age. Systematic growth assessment and evaluation of endocrine function must be done before it is possible to intervene in an attempt to improve the growth of HIV-infected children. Perhaps the most crucial reason to assess growth in this population is that growth abnormalities in HIV-infected children may be the first sign of progression toward symptomatic disease and may serve as a prognostic sign.
This study is a retrospective chart review comparing growth in two groups of children: 1) children who are HIV-infected secondary to maternal transmission (n=76), and 2) children who had been HIV-antibody positive at birth but became sero negative for the virus and continue to be followed (n=84).
