Research and/or Clinical Interests:
Developing and evaluating structural, behavioral and biomedical HIV prevention interventions among drug and alcohol using populations.

Summary:
Our research group is focused on evaluating structural, behavioral and biomedical prevention interventions for drug using populations at highest risk of HIV infection. With regard to structural interventions, we have a particular interest in evaluating the impact of drug treatment on HIV risk and infection. Behavioral interventions tested by our group include group level interventions for drug using women and social network interventions for injection drug users. Our group has also conducted Phase I trials of vaginal microbicides and has participated in a Phase II trial of HIV vaccines. In collaboration with Drs. Steven Douglas and Wenzhe Ho of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia , we are also exploring the impact of continued drug and alcohol use on immune function among HIV infected individuals.

Internationally, our group is involved in studies among drug users in St. Petersburg , Russia , Rio de Janiero and Porto Alegre , Brazil . As a site of the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN), we are also involved in the development and implementation of protocols for studies targeting drug using populations in China , Thailand , and St. Petersburg . The HPTN (www.HPTN.org) is a network of domestic and international research sites established to test prevention interventions using HIV infection as the primary outcome measure.

Our research interests also include the development of methods necessary to recruit and retain high risk drug using populations, HIV risk assessments, sexual partnerships of injection drug users, and geographic analyses of risk behavior.
