Penn-Botswana Program News: The new research building at Princess Marina Hospital will have a ground breaking ceremony on Nov 21, 2008. Construction is about to start!

Botswana Overview

  • Botswana has one of the highest prevalence rates of HIV in the world with 17% infection rate overall, and 34% of women between the ages 15-49 infected by the disease
  • Since July 2001, Penn Infectious Diseases Faculty have participated in the rollout of the national Botswana antiretroviral program
  • In January 2004, Penn received funding from PEPFAR (President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relieve) to provide care on the inpatient medical wards at the Princess Marina Hospital (PMH) in Gaborone , the largest public hospital in the nation
  • In January 2005, Penn was invited to expand its involvement in inpatient care at PMH and initiate a similar program at the Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital in Francistown , the second largest city in Botswana and the site of a large public hospital
  • The PEPFAR-funded program has expanded to include outreach to 8 District Hospitals around Gaborone and Francistown , an HIV-TB educational, prevention and treatment program, and a cervical cancer-screening program in HIV infected women.
  • Approximately 50 Penn medical students and residents spend 4-6 week electives on the medical wards at PMH each year, supported by funds from the Department of Medicine, the UPHS and the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania
  • Penn faculty are helping to design the undergraduate curriculum for the new medical school in Botswana , a rotating internship and an internal medicine residency training program
  • Penn undergraduates are doing a "Semester Abroad" at the University of Botswana , and Penn undergraduate and graduate students are offered summer internships in Botswana
  • In January 2008, pediatricians from Penn and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia will provide care and infectious diseases expertise to children admitted to PMH
