The Penn Center for AIDS Research will be submitting its competing renewal application to NIH in June 2008 representing the CFAR's third, five-year funding period (2010 thru 2015). As with the first two submissions, we will be holding a half-day workshop to review the Center's current research programs and shared resource core facilities and to solicit input from CFAR members to develop the proposal and the CFAR's infrastructure for the next five years of HIV/AIDS research at Penn, CHOP and Wistar. The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Goals:
The general goals of the workshop will be to consider: 1) changes in the CFAR cores, policies, and administrative activities that will enable the CFAR to be most responsive and helpful to the HIV/AIDS research community at Penn, CHOP, and Wistar; and 2) how the CFAR can help to foster interdisciplinary research activities.  We will consider:

  • What has Penn CFAR accomplished during its ten-year existence?
  • Where is the CFAR going and where "should" it be going?
  • What has worked and what has not?
  • What are the key areas of emphasis that should be developed for future HIV/AIDS research on our campus?

The half-day workshop will include small discussion groups for each of the CFAR's scientific areas (Pathogenesis, Clinical/Therapeutics, Immunology/Vaccine, Behavioral & Social Sciences) to generate feedback and ideas for our strategic planning process.  Also, groups will consider the addition of a separate International Program in HIV/AIDS Research as one possible new area for development in our application.

The success of this Workshop depends on input from the CFAR membership. Your participation will ensure that the Penn CFAR is able to address needs of HIV/AIDS researchers on our campus and the enormous challenges the AIDS pandemic continues to pose. We look forward to an excellent discussion.

In order to reserve adequate catering for the workshop, please let Olivia Loskoski know by Wednesday, September 12th whether or not you will be able to attend. Olivia Loskoski may be reached via email at oliviaj@mail.med.upenn.edu.
