Research and/or Clinical Interests:
My research has focused on examining patient and health care factors associated with improved clinical outcomes and improved access to care for vulnerable populations with HIV.

Summary:
My recent HIV research focus is on improving diagnosis and access to treatment for persons with HIV and hepatitis C. On the inpatient general medicine and trauma services at HUP and Presbyterian, our group has found that the seroprevalence of apparently undiagnosed HIV infection is over 3% in early winter months of 2001-02. In a second study, we found that the seroprevalence of apparently undiagnosed HCV infection was 8% in patients admitted to these services in the fall of 2002. We are pursuing further work to evaluate approaches to promote routine testing and counseling for HIV and HCV in the general medicine inpatient service and to promote linkage to further evaluation and treatment for those who test positive. Other work by our group is examining the effect of dysthymia and depression as well as substance abuse on access to HAART in women and men with HIV using the HIV Cost and Services Utilization Study data.
