The Department offers several research options for residents and fellows.
Residents may apply for research electives during their CA-2 and CA-3 years in areas ranging from clinical or basic research to global health. Research electives are typically 1-6 months. Residents committed to a career involving research can apply for the Dripps Scholarship early in their CA-1 year. This competitive award guarantees 6 months of research time during their residency and 1-2 years of research time during their fellowship, including, but not limited to, positions on the department’s two NIH T-32 training grants. Opportunities to present their research findings are provided, such as at the Annual Pennsylvania Anesthesiology Resident Research Conference.
Fellows with previous research experience are encouraged to apply for a position on one of our two NIH funded T-32 training grants. These 2 year postdoctoral fellowships allow trainees to work with a mentor in any department at the University of Pennsylvania, or even in other institutions. Physicians on the training grant will also have limited clinical commitments.
Potential and current residents are encouraged to review our research web pages and research projects outlined on individual faculty webpages. Interested residents may contact the faculty directly via email to obtain further information or contact Roderic G Eckenhoff, MD, Vice-chair for research.
