About the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine
The University of Pennsylvania Health System's Division of Cardiovascular
Medicine has a long history of accomplishments in each of its
tri-partite missions - patient
care, biomedical research, and
medical education.
Michael S. Parmacek, MD, Herbert C. Rorer Professor of Medical Sciences, joined the Penn faculty in 1998 and serves as Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine.
The Division is composed of sixty-three full time faculty members and twenty-six cardiology fellows based at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In addition, cardiology practices staffed by fulltime Penn cardiologists are located at convenient off-site locations throughout the Philadelphia region and in Southern New Jersey.
The Penn Cardiovascular Medicine program is nationally recognized for state-of-the-art clinical programs, including:
- heart failure and transplantation
- cardiac electrophysiology and cardiac arrhythmia management
- interventional cardiology
- non-invasive cardiac imaging (echocardiography and cardiac MRI)
- preventive cardiology
- vascular medicine
Clinical investigators and physician scientists in the Penn Division of Cardiovascular Medicine are internationally renown for pioneering research in molecular cardiology, translational and patient-oriented cardiovascular research and clinical epidemiology.
The NIH-sponsored Training Grant in Cardiovascular Medicine and Biology each year funds six postdoctoral research fellowships. In addition, Penn Cardiovascular Medicine faculty members teach a broad array of undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate (GME) courses in the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
