Medical Student Research Preceptorship Funding Opportunity

The Center of Excellence for Diversity in Health Education and Research is inviting applications for small research preceptorship funding to Minority Medical Students engaged in on-going research projects.  The Center will provide a limited number of awards in a maximum amount of $2,500 to fund research projects in progress.  These funds are aimed at students who have an active role in a project focusing on minority health research that will lead to acquisition of research skills and knowledge. The research experience must be at least 8 weeks and at most 12 months in duration. The research must have a minority health focus.  Minority health research is defined by the criterion of the NIH National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities as: “basic, clinical, and behavioral studies including research to prevent, diagnose, and treat such conditions as diseases, disorders, and other conditions including mental health and substance abuse that are unique to, more serious in, or more prevalent in racial and ethnic minorities or for which the factors of medical risks or types of intervention may be different for such population groups.”  Readily identifiable clinical projects will have at least one principal objective/hypothesis related to minority health or the majority of the subjects will be minorities.

Eligible candidates are minority (Priority given to African American, Latino and Native American) students in the School of Medicine who are engaged in an ongoing research project on site at the University and who are not currently being funded for the same project.  A written report should be submitted within sixty (60) days of the conclusion of the research experience.  In addition, award recipients may be requested to present their project at COE’s Annual Health Disparities Conference.
