The Center of Excellence on Minority Health considers faculty development activities during residency and in particular during fellowship training critically important to efforts to increase the number of minority faculty nationwide. The Center demonstrates this priority in many ways. Not only are there multiple minority fellowship grants available to those who join Penn's community, but also the University's School of Medicine and the Center of Excellence make many opportunities available.

Minority Residents and Fellows Identification Plan:

Currently the Center is developing a registry of the minority residents and fellows in the Philadelphia area. Because fellows usually represent the level of training prior to faculty appointment, the Center is developing this program to establish and maintain contact with these fellows throughout their training.

Annual Minority Residents and Fellows Meeting:

This meeting, held twice per year, aims to educate minority residents and fellows regarding academic careers (discussion of faculty activities and preparation for academia at the fellowship level) and to introduce fellows to one another and to the resources and opportunities at Penn.

Comprehensive Residents and Fellows Development Plan (6 Steps):

The Center of Excellence provides multiple programs designed to improve the health of its surrounding community and also to recruit students, residents, fellows, and faculty and to involve them in research and clinical care, and teaching. To successfully achieve this goal, the Center has developed a 6-step program. Each of the six components is targeted toward further strengthening and developing skills to better prepare residents and fellows for faculty appointments.

The six steps are:

(1) General Career Counseling

(2) Identification and Assignments of Mentors for Minority Faculty

(3) Research Skills Development

a. Formal Coursework in Clinical and Health Research (Tenure Track and Clinician Educator Track)
b. Research Project Assistance
(4) Medical Presentation Skills Development

(5) Scientific Writing Skills Workshop

(6) Research Grant Writing Workshop
