Program Overview

The Dermatopathology: Self Assessment and Board Review course administered by the Department of Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine meets important needs for continuing medical education in the subspecialty of dermatopathology. The course provides a comprehensive and efficient tool for participants to evaluate their competence in dermatopathology. It is an intensive two-day review of cutaneous pathology by microscopic and kodachrome examination of unknown slides. Subsequent discussions will review diagnostic criteria and pertinent differential diagnoses.The following dermatopathology topics will be discussed:

  1. Vesiculobullous disorders
  2. Congenital diseases of the skin
  3. Infectious and non-infectious granulomas
  4. Epidermal tumors
  5. Inflammatory diseases of the appendages
  6. Adnexal tumors
  7. Melanocytic lesions
  8. Panniculitides
  9. Soft tissue tumors
  10. Cutaneous immunofluorescence
  11. Electron microscopy

Target Audience

This program is designed as a review for dermatology residents, pathology residents and dermatopathology fellows preparing for board certification, as well as practicing dermatopathologists, dermatologists and pathologists preparing for re-certification exams. A basic knowledge of dermatopathology is necessary.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Evaluate general dermatopathology lesions/entities.
  2. Identify appropriate histologic criteria to make general dermatopathology diagnoses.
  3. Discuss the use of direct immunofluorescence studies, and testing in dermatopathology.
  4. Explain the relevance of electron microscopy and immunohistochemical staining in dermatopathology.

Accreditation

The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Designation of Credit

The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 14.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The University of Pennsylvania Dermatopathology: Self Assessment and Board Review is recognized by the American Academy of Dermatology for 14 hours of AAD Category I CME credit and may be used toward the American Academy of Dermatology’s Continuing Medical Education Award.

Cancellation Policy

The University of Pennsylvania reserves the right to cancel or to postpone any activity due to unforeseen circumstances. In the event of cancellation or postponement, the University will refund registration fees but will not be responsible for related costs or expenses to participants, including cancellation fees assessed by hotels, airlines, or travel agencies. In order to process refunds, cancellations must be received in writing by Susan Lamey no later than June 2, 2008. No refunds will be issued thereafter.

    Course tuition includes:

        • Evaluation and discussion of 130 glass microscopic slides and 15
          kodachrome slides

        • A CD-ROM representing all the cases presented at this course
          for review and/or teaching purposes after departure

        • A syllabus which includes key diagnostic criteria for each of the
          cases

        • Microscope rental

        • Continental breakfast, lunch, mid-morning and mid-afternoon
          refreshments

        • Certificate of Completion
