Combined Medicine and Dermatology Training Program

For a number of reasons, it has become difficult to obtain more than one year of internal medicine training prior to entering a dermatology training program. In the past, a large number of academic dermatology faculty, particularly those interested in complex medical dermatology, received training in both fields and found it beneficial in their careers and patient care. There is now a combined Medicine/Dermatology five-year training program at the University of Pennsylvania that is approved by both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Dermatology. The combined medicine and dermatology residency training program is an interdigitated program that allows residents to train simultaneously in Internal Medicine and Dermatology, leading to board eligibility in both. The first year is training in Internal Medicine. The second year is training in Dermatology. Years 3-5 each include 6 months of Internal Medicine and 6 month of Dermatology training.

This program provides an opportunity for qualified applicants interested in expanding their training in Medicine and is suited for individuals interested in the care of complex medical-dermatology patients or in an academic career related to developing expertise in an area of Medical Dermatology.

The application for this combined program requires applying via the Combined Medicine and Dermatology Training Program, ERAS # 7854144002.
Only applications received via the combined program number referenced above will be reviewed for this training program.
Both the Departments of Medicine and Dermatology must deem the qualified applicant acceptable for training. Dr. Lisa Bellini is the Internal Medicine Program Chair, and you would need to let her know of your interest in the program. The Department of Dermatology’s on-line applicant questionnaire indicates several potential interests. Those applicants interested in this training program should indicate their interest in this program on that questionnaire.

PLEASE NOTE: In order to be considered for the Medicine and Dermatology Training Program, the Departments of Dermatology and Medicine must receive your combined program application by the OCTOBER 15, 2009 deadline.
