Research Summary
Dr. Gelfand's research is focused on epidemiology, clinical trials, drug safety, and psoriasis. His epidemiology research focuses on the natural history of psoriasis and the risk of various health outcomes associated with psoriasis such as malignancy, diabetes/metabolic disorders, atherosclerosis/myocardial infarction, and psoriatic arthritis. These studies are examining how the chronic inflammatory nature of psoriasis itself can lead to various health outcomes which share similar immune abnormalities. These studies are important to understanding the impact psoriasis has on a patients health and are informative for planning and interpreting long term safety studies of novel therapies for psoriasis. His clinical trials research focuses on improving efficiency of trials through use of efficient statistical designs and the creation and validation of surrogate endpoints to predict early on in the course of treatment which patients will have a clinical response. He also designs and conducts phase I-IV investigator initiated studies examining novel therapies for disorders such as psoriasis, cutaneous T cell lymphoma, and hidradenitis as well as studies investigating novel applications of imaging devices for skin disease. Dr. Gelfand also serves as an investigator on a number of industry initiated clinical trials of novel therapies for psoriasis and other common skin conditions. Dr. Gelfand’s research has been funded by grants from the National Institute for Arthritis, Musculoskeletal, and Skin Diseases, the Dermatology Foundation, the American Skin Association, and several unrestricted grants from industry.
