Katrina Armstrong, MD, MSCE, named Chief of General Internal Medicine Division

November 18, 2008 - Dr. Richard P. Shannon, Chair of the Department of Medicine, is delighted to announce that Katrina Armstrong, M.D., M.S.C.E. has accepted the position of Chief of the General Internal Medicine Division in the Department of Medicine, effective December 1, 2008.

Katrina is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. After she completed an Internship, Residency and Chief Residency in Medicine at Johns Hopkins, she came to the University of Pennsylvania in 1996 as a Physician Scientist Fellow in the Division of General Internal Medicine. In 1998 she joined the faculty at Penn and is currently Associate Professor of Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Biostatistics and Epidemiology. Katrina is also Associate Director of the Abramson Cancer Center and Co-Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program.

Katrina is an internationally recognized investigator in the areas of medical decision making, cancer prevention, quality of care, and cancer outcomes. For her work, Katrina received the Outstanding Junior Investigator of the Year Award from the Society of General Internal Medicine in 2003, the Alice Hersh Award from Academy Health in 2005, and election to the American Society of Clinical Investigation in 2006. Her research program has received extensive federal funding, including R01s, projects in center grants, and awards from the American Cancer Society, Department of Defense and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She has over 75 peer-reviewed articles in highly regarded journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of General Internal Medicine, and JAMA.

At Penn, Katrina has participated in a number of search committees, review committees and strategic planning committees for the Department and the School of Medicine. She is a member of the Executive Committees of the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics and the Abramson Cancer Center, and is the founding Director of the Masters of Science in Health Policy Research.

As Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine, Katrina will expand on a strong foundation of excellence. She assumes the reins from Sankey Williams, who has built one of the most highly respected Divisions in the country. We are immensely grateful to Sankey for his leadership and devotion.
