The University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine's Divisions of General Internal Medicine (DGIM) and Hospital Medicine (DHM) are at the forefront of health services and policy research. Our commitment lies in addressing significant factors influencing health and healthcare in the United States, such as socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic disparities, aging, the opioid use disorder epidemic, healthcare organization, policy, and finance, as well as emerging digital technologies like wearable devices, telemedicine, and artificial intelligence, and practice patterns. We possess extensive expertise in various methodologies, including causal inference, intervention development and testing, behavioral economics, implementation science, qualitative research, quality improvement, advanced data analysis methods like natural language processing and machine learning, VA research, and working within a learning health system.

Furthermore, we collaborate extensively with health services and policy researchers across the University of Pennsylvania. Many of our DGIM and DHM faculty hold research leadership positions in prominent institutions such as the Leonard David Institute (LDI) of Health Economics, the VA Center of Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP), the Penn Medicine Center for Health Equity Advancement (CHEA), the Center for Evidence-based Medicine (CEP), the Center for Healthcare Improvement and Patient Safety (CHIPS), the Penn Center for Community Health Workers, the Healthcare Transformation Institute, the Opportunity for Health Lab, and the Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics (CHIBE).

Penn DGIM and DHM researchers actively engage in applied efforts within the healthcare system, community partnerships, population health initiatives, and shaping policies at the local, state, and national levels. Additionally, we play a significant role in research education, contributing to various undergraduate, master's, and PhD programs, as well as mentoring students and trainees across all levels.
