Critical Care Medicine FellowshipTwo to three positions are available each year for ABA certified or ABA eligible anesthesiologists who wish to pursue additional training in Critical Care Medicine and Critical Care Research. Clinical training consists of a year-long continuum emphasizing treatment of the surgical patient. In the primary Critical Care Track, the trainee will spend nine months covering the Surgical Critical Care Service. This service provides primary ICU care for patients on the trauma, vascular, surgical, surgical oncology, general and sub-specialty surgical services. In the remaining three months, exposure to Medical, Pediatric, Transplant, Thoracic and Cardiac Surgical patients, as well as operative experience in Trauma and Transplant Anesthesia can be obtained. All aspects of training, including administration and ICU management are emphasized. Fellows will be required to lead a group of interns, residents, students, nurses and pharmacists in daily rounds. Delivery of at least one didactic lecture per month is required. In addition, the trainee will be expected to participate in a new didactic program on patient-oriented research. Under this program, the fellow will design and implement a clinical research project under the direction of a faculty mentor and will attend a series of core lectures involving statistics, trial designs, analytical methods and a host of specific research techniques. Completion of the year-long continuum leads to eligibility for the ABA examination in Critical Care Medicine. A second track emphasizes the care of the Cardiac and Thoracic Surgical Patient. In this 18-month continuum, the trainee will spend nine months directly caring for post-operative surgical patients. At least half of this will be spent in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit. Six months will be spent in the Cardiac Surgical Operating room delivering anesthesia. In the additional three months, the fellow will receive training in transesophageal echocardiography and will be allowed to elect additional training. Fellows will be expected to participate in the patient-oriented research program as detailed above. Research is strongly encouraged. All fellows will be expected to participate in the patient-oriented research program and therefore to design and implement a clinical research project. In addition, there are many funded, ongoing clinical and basic science projects, which are detailed in the research sections of the web site. A second year of research training can be arranged and is encouraged for the fellow interested in an academic career. The University of Pennsylvania is a diverse, multifaceted institution with virtually unlimited resources for the motivated applicant. For further information, please contact:
