The Cardiovascular and Thoracic Fellowship is designed to prepare for a
career in cardiac, thoracic and vascular anesthesia. Clinical instruction is
accomplished by assigning the fellow to a CVT operating room with clinical
and educational responsibilities that may include the instruction of a Penn
CA-2 or CA-3 resident in anesthesia. Supervision and teaching in both
clinical and educational issues is provided the assigned faculty member.
A
separate rotation to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center may provide the opportunity
to care for cardiac surgery patients in a community hospital environment.
The intraoperative experience in CVT Anesthesia will be supplemented with the
management of cardiac and thoracic patients in the Cardiothoracic Intensive
Care Unit under the direct tutelage of a cardiac anesthesia attending. The
CT-ICU experience will include the instruction and supervision of Penn
anesthesia and surgical residents in the management of the cardiac/thoracic
patients during convalescence and recovery. Echocardiography training
includes a 5-week period of formal instruction in the echo lab by members of
the Division of Cardiology. Further experience is gained by examination and
interpretation in the OR under the guidance of echo-trained
anesthesiologists. After successful completion of the fellowship with
subspecialty training in TEE, the fellow would be prepared for certification
in the basic examinations in echocardiography offered by the National Board
of Echocardiography, Inc.
The educational activities of the fellowship also
include:
- A continuous process of self-education with readings guided by an
assigned CVT faculty mentor.
- Participation in the Thursday morning TEE fellows conferences and
CVT/QA/QI meetings.
- Weekly attendance and participation at the Departmental Grand Rounds with
the requirement for each fellow to offer one presentation at this forum under
the guidance of a CVT faculty member.
- Weekly attendance at Thursday morning research conference.
- Weekly participation in Wednesday AM Cardiology CT surgery-CVT
Anesthesia Conference
Participation in research is an important
aspect of the fellowship experience for those anticipating academic careers.
Participation in clinical or laboratory projects is encouraged, and is based
on the interest of the fellow and the promise of the area for long term
development, both for research significance and extramural funding. For more
details, follow the links to the faculty and peruse the research section of
the web site.
