Fellowship Research Opportunities
Potential and current medical and graduate students are encouraged to review our research web pages and research projects outlined on individual faculty webpages. Interested candidates are also advised to contact the faculty members directly via email for up-to-date information and details. A variety of support mechanisms are available, a few of which are detailed below. NIH T32 Training GrantThe department holds an NIH T32 training grant in anesthesiology from NIGMS that has had over a thirty year history of success. The grant has just been renewed for another 5 years in 2007, with the novel addition of faculty from Weill Medical College of Cornell University as partners. This regional approach to research training will increase both the pool of candidates and the research opportunities that they can select. The historical philosophy of the Penn T32 has been to have trainees, often selected from our highly motivated anesthesiology and critical care residents, work under a world-class mentor in another department or institution. On completion of the two-year fellowship, these trainees often return to our department as faculty, and bring with them new approaches, ideas, and collaborations. This strategy has been so successful that trainees are now requesting Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care faculty as their research mentors. The T32 provides full salary support during the two years of research, and a modest travel and supplies budget. The fellow salary can be supplemented through limited clinical activities, and student loan repayment programs are available through NIH (see below).

FAER Research Fellowship GrantThe FAER Research Fellowship Grant provides a one-year grant to individuals currently participating in an ACGME approved anesthesiology training program. This fellowship may be either in conjunction with the Clinical Scientist Track (CST) of the residency program or with a clinical fellowship sponsored by an ACGME approved anesthesiology training program. When in conjunction with the CST, the one year of research under this grant does not have to directly follow the six month research experience, but there must be a total of 18 months of research. When in conjunction with a clinical fellowship, the 12 months of research generally follows the 12 months of clinical fellowship experience. For more information, visit the FAER web site. The Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at PennThe RWJ Clinical Scholars program at Penn prepares physicians to become leaders in improving the nation's health and healthcare. The program provides opportunities to work across disciplines and think creatively and rigorously about healthcare issues. Residents apply for the program and can choose a discipline to pursue. The University of Pennsylvania is one of four training sites for The Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program across the US, including Yale University, UCLA and the University of Michigan. Mark Newman, MD, a 2008 RWJ Clinical Scholar, will be doing a fellowship in Anesthesiology & Critical Care at The Center for Outcomes Research. For more information on how to apply:
