The Admission Process

In considering applications for this residency, our primary concern is that applicants have the information and the freedom needed to obtain the residency positions most appropriate for them. In brief, we participate in the ERAS program for medical student applicants and accept applications outside the match from graduate physicians. We support the timetable set forth by ERAS for application to residencies.

We reserve a number of residency positions for physicians applying outside of ERAS. Typically, these physicians either have decided on a career change or have completed training in another specialty. We interview these applicants throughout the year. Those with previous training or who are enrolled currently in a residency must submit a letter from the chair of their most recent department before an interview is granted. We inform these applicants of the committee's decision within approximately two weeks, and a set a mutually convenient deadline for the candidate's decision.

We recommend a clinical base year (CBY) position giving substantial responsibility for direct patient care. Anesthesiologists are physicians first; the ability to review a case efficiently, interview a patient and assess the patient's overall medical condition is learned in the CBY and is an essential skill for residents in anesthesiology.

Documents needed for complete application file:

  • Completed application
  • Dean's letter (release date November 1)
  • Transcript (release date November 1)
  • Letters of reference (3)
  • Letter from current chair if now enrolled in another residency
