HousingThere are numerous housing options for interns and residents at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Most choose to live nearby or within one-half hour of the hospital. Because the majority of the clinical experience is near HUP, the University City area (surrounding the University of Pennsylvania and neighboring Drexel University) is an especially convenient location. One bedroom apartments begin at $400/month and probably average $600/month. Some residents choose to live in the Center City or Art Museum areas. These areas perhaps provide more cultural distractions but less of the collegiate atmosphere found in University City. Apartments run approximately $500-800/month. These areas are convenient and close to the hospital, making them attractive for the intern or resident who does not know the city well. Still others choose to live further from work. Manayunk and Roxborough, near the Schuylkill River, the Lansdowne, Drexel Hill and Havertown area have been popular among interns and residents, especially those who are married or have families, because they are relatively quiet, very safe and inexpensive. The New Jersey suburbs are also surprisingly convenient and inexpensive. All these areas are within a one-half hour drive of HUP. Those who are interested in purchasing a home should know that homes in the Philadelphia area have historically shown higher appreciation rates than homes in any other large metropolitan area in the United States. Homes may be found through realtors or by checking bulletin boards at HUP for flyers put up by finishing residents who wish to sell their own homes. Most residents choose to rent and learn more about the area before purchasing a home. Other residents in the program are valuable sources of information. The off-campus housing office provides services regarding information about available housing, ratings form prior tenants, information on how to find an apartment, and how to read a lease. This office is located at 3905 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6005.
