Chief Residents' Message
Welcome to the Penn Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care. Since the times of R.D. Dripps, Penn's Department of Anesthesia has been at the forefront of producing leading academic and clinical anesthesiologists. The vast resources found at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and our affiliate hospitals permit every resident to gain the well-rounded experience necessary to become a strong clinician. The complexity of cases, the extensive research opportunities, and the multitude of fellowship prospects allow each of our residents to go well beyond the requirements of the American Board of Anesthesiology. While every year many residents pursue fellowships in critical care, cardiac anesthesia, pain management, and pediatric anesthesia, others join private practice groups across the nation, carrying with them the Penn tradition. Residents currently rotate at four hospitals within the University of Pennsylvania Health System and located on campus: the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and the Veteran's Hospital of Philadelphia. Each institution has a different array of cases to offer:
The success of both the hospital and our department has lead to recent expansion in our residency program and faculty. Our residents win research awards, participate in international medicine, and hold leadership positions in the ASA. Each residency class is a diverse group of approximately twenty-four residents, making it easy to find friends with common interests. There are a variety of activities frequently organized by both the residents and the department that foster a sense of community. Annual events include the Resident Appreciation Dinner, the Holiday Party, Dr. Burkey's summer cookout, Penn Anesthesia Running Team, the Annual Resident Retreat, and sports outings to Phillies, Flyers, and Sixers games. A newly-founded group brings women faculty and residents together for social outings on a monthly basis. Philadelphia is a fairly large and diverse city with a long national history. It has a relatively low cost of living for a large northeastern city and is home to the largest urban park system in the United States. Residents have all of the benefits of living in a big urban area including the opera and theater, science and art museums, the zoo and much more. Philadelphia has a busy nightlife with world-class restaurants, and there is plenty to do any day of the week. Others prefer the quieter suburbs for their families and enjoy a reasonable commute to Penn's campus. Completing an Anesthesiology residency at the University of Pennsylvania Health System empowers our residents with an enormous range of choices and possibilities. They are highly qualified for successful careers in academics, private practice or to pursue fellowship training here or anywhere across the nation.
