Research Opportunities for Residents

Potential and current residents are encouraged to review our research web pages and research projects outlined on individual faculty webpages. Interested residents are also encouraged to contact the faculty directly via email to obtain further information.

Resident Research
Residents who have identified a project and faculty mentor can apply in the spring of their CA-1 year for blocks of research time to be used in their CA-2 and CA-3 years. Projects range from retrospective chart reviews to molecular biology. The application process involves a small proposal which is reviewed competitively.

Dripps Scholarship
In the fall of their CA-1 year, residents with research interests are encouraged to apply for a Dripps Scholarship award. This highly competitive award, named in honor of the first Penn Anesthesia Chair, Robert D. Dripps, entitles the holder to additional stipend during their CA-2 and 3 years, unique research opportunities, and guarantees a T32 position, or a clinical fellowship with at least 12 months of research time after their CA-3 year.

FAER Resident Scholar Program
An educational grant of $1,000 is provided to selected anesthesiology programs to facilitate this educational opportunity for CA-1 or early CA-2 residents. Residents participate in activities at the ASA Annual Meeting, including workshops, scientific sessions, exhibits and refresher courses.
