Anesthesia 200

Theoretical and practical instruction in perioperative patient care, anesthetic management and life support skills relevant to all future physicians is offered. The roles of the anesthesiologist in the medical care of the patient, from the preoperative evaluation, through the intraoperative course and into the postoperative period are stressed.

  • Principles of pharmacology and physiology, as applied to the clinical care of the perioperative patient will be emphasized.
  • Techniques for airway management, intravenous sedation and safe use of local anesthetics will be discussed.
  • Monitoring procedures will include electrocardiography, temperature, capnography, oximetry, non-invasive blood pressure measurements and analysis of arterial blood gases.

Each student will assist in the administration of anesthetics under staff supervision. Lectures, conferences and rounds will be conducted by members of the department. Each student will spend one week full-time in the Department of Anesthesia.
