Anesthesia 800

By arrangement with Dr. Eckenhoff, Vice-chair for Research, students may obtain opportunities for direct, close associations with senior investigators.

The department has three major themes to its research:

  • oxygen transport and tissue oxygenation
  • mechanisms of drug action
  • the physiology and pharmacology of perioperative care (including critical care medicine)

The student can select a field of interest from a wide range of topics, including:

  • mechanisms and treatment of acute respiratory failure
  • determinants of hypoxia during anesthesia
  • pharmacology and pathophysiology of the pulmonary circulation
  • pulmonary and tissue gas transport mechanisms
  • computer modeling of transport processes
  • cerebral metabolism and circulation
  • physiology and pharmacology of the microcirculation

The work emphasizes experimental design, methodology, critical review of literature and appropriate analysis of results.

Opportunities for clinical research are available in numerous areas. Desk and laboratory space is provided in the well-equipped Center for Research in Anesthesia. A minimum of three months full time is required with longer periods available for pursuit in greater depth.
