PREDICTIVE STUDIES VIII (PS VIII): CO2 and Adaptation to Acute
Hypoxia
Major Category: CO2 and adaptation to acute hypoxia (PS VIII)
Subcategory: Basis - Predictive Studies VIII (PS VIII)
Date: November 1992
Summary: Experiments in this Predictive Study and other laboratories have shown improvement in useful consciousness of normal men at rest when atmospheric CO2 partial pressure is increased during the impaired consciousness caused by exposure to varied degrees of abrupt or sustained atmospheric hypoxia. The overall objective of PS VIII is to obtain quantitative physiologic measurements of respiratory, gas transport, and brain circulatory factors that improve brain and systemic body oxygenation, and contribute to acute improvement in mental function during rest and changing degrees of physical work in hypoxic respiratory environments.
A specific further purpose is to provide this information for predictive modeling of rates and degrees of acute adaptation and de-adaptation to hypoxia, producible by control of inspired CO2.
Relevance is to accidental or intentional exposure to hypoxic atmospheres in situations of present or long-range manned activity, in closed compartments, including space station, spacecraft, sub-sea or Earth structures.
