PREDICTIVE STUDIES VIII (PS VIII): CO2 and Adaptation to Acute Hypoxia
Major Category: CO2 and adaptation to acute hypoxia (PS VIII)
Subcategory 3: Supplemental evaluation of 4 mental function tests.

Date: February 1993

Expt. Title: Preliminary Series 3. An experiment series with 10% inspired O2 at 1 ATA in N2 without CO2 in 5 Subjects at-rest and at 50 and 100 watts exercise. (Expt. 14.11)

Description:

The purpose of this series (preliminary series 3) was to evaluate the same four mental performance tests used previously for sensitivity to 10.7% inspired O2, in Subjects at-rest and during 50 and 100 watts exercise. Following a control period of breathing air at-rest for 10 min., the Subjects inspired 10% O2 at-rest for 21 min., then during 50 watts exercise for 12.5 min. and then during 100 watts exercise for 12.5 min. This was followed by 15 min. breathing air.

Measurements:
Physiological:

Arterial O2 saturation, heart rate, end-tidal PCO2 and PO2.

Mental Performance:

Time reproduction Test of Time Estimation (PMS Test D-1)
Choice Reaction Time Test of Response Orientation (PMS Test H-1)
Visual Digit Span Test of Span Memory (PMS Test I-1)
Operations Test of Numerical (Reasoning) Ability (PMS Test K-1)
