PREDICTIVE STUDIES VIII (PS VIII): CO2 and Adaptation to Acute Hypoxia
Major Category: CO2 and adaptation to acute hypoxia (PS VIII)
Subcategory 9: Physiological responses to hypoxia and hypoxia with 4% CO2, in exercise at 1 ATA.

Date: December 1995

Expt. Title Acronym: PERCH = Physiological (responses to) Exercise (and) Rest (while breathing) CO2 (and) Hypoxic (gas mixture).

Expt. Title: PERCH 3. Physiological responses to inspired gas mixtures of 12% O2 and 12% O2 with 4% CO2, at-rest followed by 50 watts bicycle ergometer exercise. (Expt. 14.00, 14.23)

Description:

A study to obtain data on selected physiological parameters with inspired gases of 12% O2 at 1 ATA with and without 4% CO2 to provide a matching set of data for comparison with prior data for 10% O2 with and without 4% CO2. The experiment protocol was 5 min. at-rest breathing air, then, breathing the test gas, 10 min. at-rest followed by 6 min. of 50 watts bicycle ergometer, exercise, then 7 min. recovery from exercise while still breathing the test gas mixture.  N = 6.

Measurements:
Physiological:

Arterial O2 saturation and heart rate by pulse oximeter, end-tidal CO2 and O2 tensions. Inspired O2 and CO2 concentrations monitored with digital indicators and controlled to + 0.1%.
