Hyperbaric Medicine at HUP

HyperbaricThe University of Pennsylvania has been a leader in research in high pressure environments for over 50 years. In 1968, a multidisciplinary facility was dedicated as the Institute for Environmental Medicine, in recognition of the increasing need to study the changing relationship between man and his environment. Since then, the Institute has undergone several expansions and a recent renovation. Today, the IFEM complex includes a clinical treatment facility and state-of-the-art laboratories oriented towards biochemistry, cell biology and molecular genetics. IFEM is committed to further investigations on the clinical use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy; current projects include evaluating the mechanism for HBO effectiveness in CO poisoning, the use of HBO therapy for refractory skin ulcers, and the pathophysiology of oxidant injury.
