Welcome to the Emergency Medicine at Penn residency program’s website. Our first class began in June of 1996 with 6 residents. Since then, we’ve grown into a group of 40 bright, hardworking, and fun-loving residents who come from all over the country and have a wide variety of interests and life experiences.

I think the success of any EM training program begins and ends with the clinical experience, and this is largely determined by its patient population. Ours is tremendously diverse and unfortunately underserved with primary care. This forces many of them to seek care in our emergency department, often when critically ill.

The combination of the urban, inner city population of West Philadelphia along with patients who are attracted to the tertiary care specialties available at our internationally recognized institution make our emergency department a fantastic melting pot and stimulating clinical experience. Complement this with our outstanding faculty and you have created a tremendous educational experience.

The faculty are true leaders in the field of emergency medicine. They are active clinicians and researchers and many have been successful academically as presidents and meeting directors for SAEM, editorial boards, reviewers for major journals, national lecturers, and authors of numerous books, chapters and journal publications each year.

Finally, the four year curriculum allows each resident in-depth exposure of a wide variety of emergency medicine experiences including critical care, EMS, bedside ultrasound, clinical toxicology, hyperbaric and undersea medicine, and pediatrics. As a result, our residents develop not only competence but expertise. In addition to this diverse clinical curriculum there are also 5 months of electives which allow our residents to tap into the rich mentoring and academic resources available at our institution.

Hopefully this web site will give you a good sense of our residency program and the people that make it a great place to train.
