Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship
The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health has teamed with Gary W. Dorshimer, MD, FACP, CAQSM, of Pennsylvania Hospital to offer a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship through Penn Medicine. This PCSM fellowship will be open to all primary care residents, including family medicine, internal medicine, and emergency medicine. The fellowship has one position per year.
Sports Medicine Training as a Fellow
The fellowship will include experiences with:
- Philadelphia Eagles, including full–time coverage at the pre–season training camp
- Philadelphia Flyers
- Philadelphia Kixx, 2007–2008 Major Indoor Soccer League Champions
The fellow will cover a broad range of sports through:
- Work with the University of Pennsylvania Athletics Department, including the Penn Relays track and field tournament
- Participation in the pre–participation physical exams for multiple college and professional teams
- Coverage of several other local university and high school sports programs
The fellow will provide care in weekly training rooms and athletic events throughout the academic year, allowing for hands–on learning and autonomy. The fellow will work closely with the sports medicine faculty at the University of Pennsylvania Sports Medicine Center, UPenn Student Health, and Dr. Dorshimer.
Academic Pursuits as a Fellow
The fellow is also involved in teaching other students and residents during their rotations to help strengthen their knowledge in anatomy, physiology, and evaluation and management of sports–related injuries and illnesses. He or she will develop lectures for the multi–disciplinary Sports Medicine Conferences at Pennsylvania Hospital.
Clinical research will be encouraged, beginning at the August Eagles training camp in collaboration with an exercise physiologist studying heat–related illnesses and hydration.
Writing case reports and reviewing articles or chapters for not only submission for publication in peer–reviewed journals, but also for presentation at national meetings will be done under the supervision of Dr. Dorshimer and Rahul Kapur, MD.
In addition, the second half of the year has some flexibility to pursue personal areas of interest in sports medicine through the resources and connections of Penn Medicine and Pennsylvania Hospital.
The application deadline is October 1, 2011. Please send all correspondence to:
