Medical Student Education

Overview

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health is Penn’s leader in primary care education for medical students in Modules 1through 6. Student activities are:

  • The core Family Medicine Clerkship
  • Family Medicine Interest Group
  • Summer Assistantship in Community Medicine and Public Health
  • Module 4 Clerkship in Family Medicine
  • Sub-Internship in Family Medicine (fulfills graduation requirement)
  • Electives in Family Medicine: Electives
  • Sports Medicine, Public Health and Community Based Practice, Externship in Family Medicine, Scholarly Pursuit
  • Career advising and mentorship for students interested in Family Medicine and Primary Care

Training in Family Medicine and Community Health takes place at multiple clinical sites, including community-based health centers, private physician offices and residency training sites as well as non-clinical locations, including patients’ homes.

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health has an active core research faculty, (Research faculty) which has had an annual budget of approximately two million dollars in sponsored programs for the past four years. Current research activities include the following areas:

  • Patient Centered Medical Home
  • Community Health
  • Public Health
  • Cancer Prevention
  • Prenatal and Obstetrical Outcomes
  • DepressionLiteracy and Health Outcomes
  • Complimentary and Alternative Medicine

The department encourages students with research interests to become involved by contacting faculty directly.

First year students often get involved with the Department through the active Family Medicine Interest Group, which offers lunch time talks, dinners, workshops and one-on-one mentoring for Perelman medical students.
