The Division of Geriatric Medicine is dedicated to enhancing
the health of older adults by:
- establishing
models of interdisciplinary clinical care for the older
adults spanning the array of sites in which elderly receive
care,
- training
physicians to provide excellent clinical care of older adults
with an emphasis on enhancing functional status, quality
of life and survival,
- conducting
and facilitating research on issues of premier importance
to the elderly, and
- sponsoring
community-based education and demonstration projects.
The targets
of its educational programs are generalists internists and
family practitioners, but also surgeons and internal medicine
subspecialists. Its research focuses on the interactions among
biologic, clinical, and social (age, culture, economic status,
and organization) factors important to decision-making and
management of the underserved and vulnerable elderly. Community
outreach programs support the public health goals of the Schoool
of Medicine by working with community based organizations
that serve the elderly. To accomplish its misson, the Division
collaborates with all Departments of the School of Medicine,
as well as other clinical and basic science departments and
diverse Schools of the University.
