Masters of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE)

The Division of Geriatric Medicine in conjunction with the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB) at the University of Pennsylvania offers the opportunity for fellows in geriatric medicine to obtain a Masters of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE) focused on aging research.

The MSCE training is an excellent foundation for training as a clinical investigator. Training includes statistics with a focus on logistics regression, health measurement, study design, database development and management. See http://www.cceb.upenn.edu/main/education/msEpi.html for details of the training.

These skills can, in turn, be applied to a variety of research methods including randomized clinical trials, population based studies, pharmacoepidemiology, health services research, outcomes assessment, medical decision making and bioethics.

A core aspect of training is mentorship. The division of geriatrics’ faculty offers particular expertise in ethics, health disparities, late life cognitive disorders, osteoporosis, palliative care, and sleep medicine. In addition, the CCEB and medical school offer a vast array of experts in many of the common diseases of aging and age-related disorders.

The MSCE training is a two-year fellowship that can be undertaken either prior to or following the one year of training for the geriatrics fellowship. Research Fellowship salary and tuition support is provided based on the NIH postgraduate pay scale.

To apply for this opportunity, please contact one of us to discuss your interest in the MSCE, potential research topics you might like to study and what you see yourself doing with the degree and your geriatrics training.
