Each module has its own set of learning objectives. The following provides an overview of content for each clinical module.

Module 4

When the Mind Falters: Cognitive Losses in Dementia Addresses:

This is one of the modules in the Teaching and Learning to Care: Training for Caregivers in Long Term Care (TLC for LTC) series. TLC for LTC includes a total of six clinical modules and is directed to meeting the needs of Staff Development Educators, those in long term care who are responsible for staff education, and instructors or those who teach an individual class session.

Dementia is a major public health problem in the U.S. with over 4 million cases. Dementia and the cognitive losses, and behavioral changes it causes, presents major challenges to nursing home staff. With an improved understanding of how cognition becomes impaired and the stages of dementia, direct care staff can better assess residents’ abilities and issues, and respond to them appropriately. The module begins with an overview of the symptoms of cognitive impairment, and continues with a description of the causes, epidemiology and clinical course (stages) of dementia. Then a closer look is taken at the specific areas of cognitive impairment, and the ways that deficits in different areas of cognitive function can interfere with the patient’s daily functioning, causing disability. In the video segment, various cognitive impairments are illustrated and discussed in a lunchtime scenario with an elderly person.

This is a self contained instructional module of 20-30 minutes and includes all materials for planning and conducting staff education: planning materials for the staff development educator, all materials for the instructor including overheads and video, and handouts for participants.

Module Four:

Objectives: At the end of this module, direct care staff will be able to:

  1. Describe the stages of dementia.
  2. Distinguish among specific cognitive impairments from dementia.
  3. Link specific cognitive impairments with the disabilities they cause.
  4. Give examples of cognitive impairments and disabilities.
  5. Describe what to do when there is an acute change in cognitive or functional status.
