Biographical Sketch
Robert Pignolo is a clinician-scientist whose areas of expertise include
cellular and molecular biology of aging, osteoporosis, and metabolic
bone disease. His important contributions to the field of cellular
senescence has significance to growth control and transformation,
differentiation, angiogenesis, and mechanisms of cellular aging. He
first isolated and characterized a gene now shown to be a potent angiogenesis
inhibitor currently in clinical trials as a potential treatment for
age-related macular degeneration. These contributions are represented
in professional journals and include original papers, review articles
and book chapters. As a clinician-scientist, his areas of interest
extend to encompass the biology of bone metabolism as it relates to
important issues in geriatrics such as osteoporosis. In addition,
he runs the Osteoporosis Clinic in the Geriatrics and Extended Care
Service at the Philadelphia VA medical center. He is also co-director
of the Frontiers in Aging Course offered as an elective to fourth-year
medical students.
