Fellowship Program

Our fellowship program is designed to provide all trainees with the tools they will need to pursue lifelong careers characterized by excellence and commitment. It is our aim to insure that those who complete training will become leaders in our field whether they pursue careers in clinical, population science, or bench research.

Each and every member of our Division is dedicated to the education and career development of our fellows. We are fortunate to have two outstanding Associate Program Directors whose role is to provide oversight and mentoring to the fellows, in addition to each fellow's own mentor.

  • Dr. Angela DeMichele, Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Program Director for Clinical Research, meets with the fellows planning careers in epidemiology, clinical trials, and health services to provide guidance in mentor and project selection. In addition, Dr. DeMichele hosts a career retreat for fellows in which several graduates of the program discuss various career choices, an academic career day in which mentoring is provided on grant writing and academia, and is the Course Director of a two-week summer course providing an introduction to clinical research, attended by fellows across the health system.
  • Dr. Wafik El-Diery, Professor of Medicine and Associate Program Director for Basic and Translational Research, meets individually with fellows planning basic science and translational careers, helps them identify mentors, and meets periodically with these fellows to discuss their progress both in their research and in their careers.

Additionally, Mentoring Meetings are planned for each fellow, with committees composed of the fellow, his/her mentor, Dr. DeMichele or El-Diery as appropriate, and Dr. Alison Wakoff Loren, to facilitate career development.

Our fellows have the opportunity to train in a broad array of basic science laboratories across a diverse and groundbreaking campus that includes departments and schools throughout the University, as well as the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the Abramson Cancer Center and Research Institute, and the Wistar Institute.

Master's Degree Programs

Penn is home to four Master's Degree programs in which fellows may participate:

  • Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE) - offered through the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB) - www.cceb.upenn.edu, offers training in epidemiology, clinical trials, genetics, or bioethics
  • Master of Science in Translational Research (MTR) - through the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT) - www.itmat.upenn.edu, trains fellows in developmental therapeutics
  • Master of Science in Health Policy Research (MSHPR) - provides training in outcomes research, health disparities, and public policy alongside trainees of the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program - www.med.upenn.edu/rwjcsp/
  • Master of Public Health (MPH) - www.publichealth.med.upenn.edu

For more information, please refer to the rest of the Division's web site as well as that of the Abramson Cancer Center, home of our malignant hematology and solid tumor oncology clinical services. The Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute, is home to a large proportion of the cancer research on campus. Research programs in benign hematology can be accessed by reviewing the home pages of individual faculty members.
