Dr. Vaughn's research focuses upon patients with genitourinary cancer, with a special interest in drug development for bladder and prostate cancer. He is Study Chair for E5899, an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) trial of paclitaxel/gemcitabine in patients with advanced urothelial cancer and renal insufficiency. He is Principal Investigator for a national multi-institutional trial of weekly paclitaxel plus estramustine phosphate in hormone-refractory prostate cancer. He is also PI of an investigator-initiated trial testing this regimen as adjuvant therapy in high-risk prostatectomy patients. He participates in multiple ECOG and industry-sponsored genitourinary cancer clinical trials. In collaboration with Dr. James Coyne of the Behavioral Science program, Dr. Vaughn is studying men with advanced prostate cancer on androgen ablation therapy with respect to hot flashes, fatigue, and quality-of-life. Dr. Vaughn and others have initiated the Lance Armstrong Foundation-funded Living Well After Cancer program, a clinical and research center for cancer survivors. He leads the Testicular Cancer Survivorship program. Planned research studies will focus upon a) the impact of the late consequences of chemotherapy on quality-of-life and b) detection of subclinical atherosclerosis in testicular cancer survivors. As chair of the Penn Cancer Clinical Trials Group (PCCTG), a consortium of community oncologists of the Penn Cancer Network, Dr. Vaughn leads this clinical research cooperative group. PCCTG has completed trials in a broad variety of tumor types, resulting in publications and presentations at national meetings.
