Our Mission Statement

The Infectious Disease Division at the University of Pennsylvania was founded in 1971 when the first two faculty, Dr. Richard Root and Dr. Rob Roy MacGregor, were recruited to form the Division. The Division has subsequently grown to 30 faculty members who have trained more than 75 fellows since its inception.

The Infectious Diseases Division of the Department of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is dedicated to providing state of the art patient care and training in clinical and research aspects of infectious diseases for individuals who wish to pursue academic careers in scientific investigation, patient care, education, and public health.

The Infectious Diseases Division of the Department of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is dedicated to providing state of the art patient care and training in clinical and research aspects of infectious diseases for individuals who wish to pursue academic careers in scientific investigation, patient care, education, and public health.

As a Division we are committed to:
Developing new knowledge to benefit mankind in the understanding, prevention, and treatment of infectious diseases.
Providing our trainees with the necessary tools for lifelong research and learning.
Serving our patients with cutting edge care delivered with respect and compassion.

Our dedication to these goals is manifest in the quality of our research, the accomplishments of our trainees, and in the compassionate delivery of care to our patients. Our faculty are among the national leaders in basic science research in infectious diseases, the care of patients with HIV infection, tuberculosis, travel related illnesses, and other infectious diseases. Our trainees have assumed positions of leadership in academics, public health and industry. Our training program is characterized by its focus on education rather than service, and the wealth of clinical and research opportunities available to our fellows. The Infectious Diseases Division of the University of Pennsylvania is committed to providing the tools for physicians to become leaders in infectious diseases in the 21st century.
