Neil
Fishman, M.D.
Dr. Fishman
is the Director of the Department of Healthcare Epidemiology and Infection
Control and the Director of the Antimicrobial Management Program for
the University of Pennsylvania Health System. His research focuses on
outcome assessment and quality management issues in infectious diseases.
Specific interests include models to improve the use of antibiotics,
risk factors for the emergence of resistance, the relationship between
antimicrobial use and the emergence of resistance, and interventions
to prevent healthcare-associated infections. He received the 1996 Abbott
Achievement Award from the Infectious Diseases Society of America in
recognition of his ongoing efforts to improve antibiotic utilization
throughout the University of Pennsylvania Health System and for a proposal
to study the effects of a comprehensive antimicrobial management program
on the quality and cost of patient care in community hospitals. Additional
ongoing studies include an investigation of risk factors for the emergence
of drug resistant pneumococci, risk factors for emergence of fluoroquinolone
resistance, a randomized controlled trial of antimicrobial management
strategies, and electronic surveillance for antimicrobial errors. He
is also President-Elect of Division L (Infection Control) of the American
Society of Microbiology.
