Dr. Robert Austrian
March 25, 2007
Dr. Robert Austrian, Leader in the Fight Against Pneumococcal Diseases, died in Philadelphia on March 25, 2007. For more than five decades, Dr. Austrian devoted his professional life to conquering pneumococcal pneumonia. Working with great mastery as a clinician, epidemiologist, and microbiologist, Dr. Austrian proved that bacteremic pneumococcal pneumonia remained a killer, even in the age of antibiotics, and identified those pneumococcal types that most frequently caused disease. He used this information to develop a vaccine which has saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Robert Austrian Fellowship Fund, 502 Johnson Pavilion, Infectious Disease Division, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6073.

Dr. Richard K. Root
March 19, 2006
The medical community mourns the tragic death of Richard K. Root, which occurred on 19 March 2006. Dick was an outstanding educator, clinician, role model, and program builder. He molded infectious-disease and internal-medicine programs at some of the top medical schools in the country. His accidental death occurred during a guided river safari in Botswana, Africa, and comes as a painful reminder of how fragile life is and how rapidly tragedy can strike.
Donations may be made to the Richard K. Root Memorial Fund, in support of the Penn-Botswana Program, 502 Johnson Pavilion, Infectious Disease Division, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6073
