Recent Honors and Awards to IME Members:
Leif Finkel, M.D., Ph.D., received a David and Lucile Packard Foundation Award of $1,000,000 over five years for his project on "Meso-scale Optical Brain Imaging of Perceptual Learning". Co-PIs are IME members Kwabena Boahen and Arjun Yodh, and Diego Contreras and Brian Salzberg from Neuroscience • Louis J. Soslowsky, Ph.D., and his group received the Charles S. Neer Award for Excellence in Basic Science Research from the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons for the second year in a row • Tracy K. McIntosh, Ph.D. was named the Robert A. Groff Professor of Neurosurgery • Warren J. Ewens, Ph.D., was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society • Arjun G. Yodh, Ph.D., was elected a Fellow of the Optical Society of America • Peter Buneman, Ph.D., was named a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) • Dennis E. Discher, Ph.D., was awarded a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) for his research on the adhesion and mechanics of normal and dystrophic muscle cell membranes as a cellular engineering basis for gene therapy. Dr. Discher was promoted to Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics • Kenneth A. Barbee, Ph.D., received an NSF CAREER Award for his research on "Engineering structural adaptability into biological tissue replacements" • Kwabena A. Boahen Ph.D., was awarded a David & Lucile Packard Foundation fellowship ($625,000 over five years) for his research on "Learning as you grow: Neuromorphic chips that rewire themselves" • Daniel A. Hammer, Ph.D., was appointed Chairman of the Department of Bioengineering • Randall D. Kamien, Ph.D. was promoted to Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy, and appointed Associate Chair for Graduate Affairs in his department • Pierre Hardy, M.D., Ph.D., received a Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal Award in the Health Sciences category, for his doctoral dissertation • Robert Bucki, M.D. Ph.D., was awarded a NATO visiting academic award. This was one of only 20 in Poland for all academic disciplines • Emile R. Mohler III, M.D., was recipient of the Merck Young Investigators Award from Merck & Co., and was elected Trustee for the Society of Vascular Medicine and Biology • A poster by Vladimir Muzykantov, M.D., Ph.D., on "Intracellular immunotargeting of active reporter enzyme to endothelium in vivo" was one of two selected out of several hundreds submissions as a highlight of the Pulmonary Circulation Assembly at ATS International Symposium in Toronto • Frederick S. Kaplan, M.D. received numerous awards including: the Sir John Charnley Award and the Quality of Life Advocacy Award from the Arthritis Foundation, and the Wellcome Trust Award for Biology & Medicine. He was Penn Medical Schoolıs Distinguished Teacher Award for 1999 and the Outstanding Lecturer Award from the class of 2002, and was honored by Distinguished Lectureships in Czechoslovakia and at Oregon Health Sciences University. The Royal Television Society Educational Television & Media Award for Best Scientific Documentary was awarded to "Skeleton Key", a documentary on Dr. kaplanıs specialty, FOP (BBC, London) • Peter F. Davies, Ph.D. was awarded the Year 2000 Special Recognition Award from the American Heart Association, and was invited to deliver the 2nd Zweifach Memorial Lecture in Biomedical Engineering at the City College of New York • Several graduate students from IME membersı labs won awards for presentations of their research: Alisha Sieminski won the "best poster award" and her paper was selected for oral presentation in the 2nd Penn Cardiovascular Biology Retreat; Fred Azar won First Prize in the Graduate Student Competition at the IEEE 26th Annual Northeast BioEngineering Conference, and Michael Prange won the Stapp Student Award for his paper at the annual Stapp Car Crash Conference in Nov '99 • Several prestigious fellowships were won by graduate students in IME membersı labs. Tony Lin, received a Whitaker Foundation Graduate Fellowship in Biomedical Engineering; Becky Gusic received a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (from the Department of Defense), Maureen Sheehan received a fellowship from the American Heart Association; and Mike Borretti received an honorable mention from NSF.
