How to Apply
TThe first thing to consider carefully is your desire to formally receive substantial exposure to medical school biology (organ systems, anatomy, physiology etc) concurrent with computational and analytical courses. The HHMI-NIBIB Program is unique in this integration and is aimed at producing the best-trained PhDs in imaging sciences. The trainees will be formally associated with the prestigious HHMI and will be designated ‘HHMI Interfaces Scholars’ for the duration of their graduate studies.
Do not apply to the HHMI-NIBIB Program directly. All PhD students at UPenn belong to a Graduate Group and applications will be received through the Graduate Group. At present the current HHMI Scholars are members of the Bioengineering graduate group; however, candidates applying to the Pharmacology Graduate Group and the Mathematics and Physics departments may also be considered.
Candidates considering the latter should contact Dr. Ann Tiao (see ‘Contact Us’ link) to discuss the accommodation of the HHMI program within those departments.
Follow the normal procedure and deadline for applications to Penn (usually mid-December). Indicate at the beginning of your application that you wish to be considered for a HHMI Interfaces Scholarship.
- Post-application to the Graduate Group. There are 2 ways in which you may be considered for support after submitting an application for PhD study at UPenn.
- If you were unaware of the HHMI program and have applied to one of the above Graduate Groups at UPenn and the program fits your needs, contact the Graduate Group office and make known your interest.
- All applications that demonstrate interest in Imaging Sciences will be screened by each Graduate Group Committee. Those with outstanding credentials will be contacted to assess their interest in the HHMI program.
From the above procedures, a list of applicants to the Program will be reviewed by the Executive Committee of the HHMI-NIBIB Interfaces Program in Biomedical Imaging and Informational Science. A shortlist will be invited for interview (coincident with their Graduate Group interviews) from which the final selections will be made.
Please contact Dr. Ann Tiao with questions related to application procedures.
